School Is In, Slouching is Out!
As the summer winds down and the school year is starting, here are a few tips for kids of all ages to start the year off with healthy bodies!
PT's often see students complaining of back and neck pain after the start of the year. Some factors play into this such as backpack size and positioning as well as how much weight the student is carrying in their backpack. We also find students with poor habits arising from prolonged sitting at school and at home while doing homework.
When looking at back pack size, bigger is not better!!! The backpack should be proportional to the age and frame of your student; and when fitting the straps, the bottom of the backpack should be positioned no lower than just above the waistline. Any lower and the backpack will pull on the muscles of the upper back, neck and shoulders, possibly causing discomfort. In addition, the student may need to compensate by shifting the position of the upper body to offset the load which can lead to additional aches and pains. Be sure the backpack fits snugly to your child's body. If you notice that your child's posture changes immediately after putting on their backpack, it's a good sign that adjustments need to be made!
In terms of posture, remind your student to avoid slouching for prolonged periods. Provide a sturdy and supportive chair at home to encourage good posture, allowing for your students' feet to be flat on the floor. Make sure there is adequate lighting to prevent straining to see their computer or book. Encourage physical activity throughout the day and take a break every 30 minutes to get up and move to reduce muscle fatigue.
