TMJ Pain & Headaches
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a joint located in the front of each ear. It is responsible for opening and closing your jaw. Problems with this joint can be very painful, and can cause a host of symptoms listed below. When you have TMJ problems, it is often difficult to eat and chew due to pain. You may also experience headaches and/or dizziness. The TMJ is greatly affected by posture and often muscle imbalances are present which alter the mechanics of the joint. Your physical therapist will be able to determine this through a thorough evaluation. Because the TMJ is so closely related to the cervical spine, your physical therapist will perform a detailed evaluation of both areas in order to develop an appropriate plan for your treatment.
Symptoms of TMJ:
Jaw Pain
Facial Pain
Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
Dizziness
Headaches
Jaw clicking/popping/locking
Neck pain
Limited Jaw Opening
