Concussion Treatment

A concussion is a traumatic brain injury that is caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head. They can also be caused by motions that shake the brain within the skull. Concussions are commonly diagnosed in athletes who participate in high intensity physical sports but can happen to anyone who has had impact to the head. Whiplash injuries commonly result in head and neck injuries as well, and may cause post concussive syndrome. There does not need to be a loss of consciousness to sustain a concussion. Many concussions resolve in 7-10 days, but sometimes the symptoms can last for weeks or months.

Some of the signs and symptoms of a concussion include: headache, dizziness, nausea, fatigue, blurry vision, difficulty with sleeping, light/noise sensitivity, balance difficulties, irritability, restlessness, anxiety, depression, difficulty with short or long term memory, confusion, difficulty concentrating and aggression.

At Health In Balance Physical Therapy, our skilled physical therapists can help recover from concussions by providing training and exercises for you to eliminate or reduce dizziness and improve balance by strengthening the connection between the inner ear and the brain. They can also examine and treat the neck and spine for injury as this can be a source of many of the post concussion symptoms. Our physical therapists are trained to assess and treat post concussion syndrome so that you are safely able to achieve the greatest recovery in the shortest amount of time.
