Preparing for your Total Joint Replacement Surgery with Prehab
Do you have an upcoming surgery scheduled? Did you know there are proven benefits to working with a Physical Therapist prior to your surgery? Joint replacements are often the solution when osteoarthritis has become so severe that we are no longer able to do our everyday activities without severe pain. While a joint replacement is an excellent solution to this problem, there is a long road to recovery following this surgery and the more you prepare before surgery, the better your outcome will be. Prehab does just that.
Prehab takes a proactive approach that prepares patients to be physically and mentally ready for surgery, and is a great way to improve your overall experience before, during, and after surgery. Your experienced and knowledgeable Physical Therapist will get to know you before surgery by doing a thorough evaluation within the context of your upcoming surgery. They will assess your strength, mobility, flexibility and ability to perform some of the most basic functional activities in order to help determine what to focus on before surgery. We then work together to improve your physical capabilities as well as educate you on the surgical procedure and what to expect immediately after surgery and during the first few days of PT. This will help make your recovery faster and easier and put your mind at ease by knowing more about how things will transpire. You will also be introduced to and practice the post-surgery exercises so you can get a jump start on your recovery immediately after surgery and have confidence in your ability to do everything you need to do to help you successfully return to your active lifestyle as quickly as possible. You will have many opportunities to discuss what to expect after surgery including progression of rehab, movement and personal goals, precautions to be aware of, and anything else unique to your surgery so you feel prepared. We will communicate with your physician prior to surgery to ensure all your questions and concerns are answered.
The therapists at Health In Balance will be presenting on this topic on May 13th from 10-11 am and May 18th from 1-2pm. This talk will be free and open to the public with Covid precautions in place. Please call 262.236.0176 to sign up as space is limited.
